GS Retail's convenience store chain, GS25, is launching the 'Easy SIM for Overseas Travel,' a global prepaid SIM card (USIM) available in 40 countries, in response to the growing demand for international travel.
This product is an 'open ticket' style SIM card, meaning customers don't need to pre-select a country or usage period when purchasing. This offers the advantage of flexible adaptation to unexpected changes in travel plans without incurring additional costs.
Usage is simple. After purchasing the SIM, when ready to use, simply scan the QR code printed on the back of the card, select the desired country, period, and data usage, and complete the payment to activate. It offers stable data access in over 40 countries worldwide, including Japan, Europe, and the United States. The SIM card is priced at 3,000 won.
GS25 has developed this product to provide overseas travelers with a convenient and affordable communication service during the summer vacation season. It's expected to set a new standard for convenience store communication services by offering both △competitive pricing and △enhanced purchase convenience.
Firstly, to alleviate the burden of communication costs, an essential expense for overseas travel amid the current high inflation, price competitiveness has been enhanced. Through partnerships with leading global roaming networks, users can enjoy rates up to 80% lower than roaming prices for the same destinations. Furthermore, data plans range from a minimum of 1GB to unlimited, allowing individuals to choose the most suitable and cost-effective plan based on their data usage.
Additionally, the hassle of ordering the prepaid SIM online and waiting 1-2 days for delivery via courier or airport pickup has been eliminated. Customers can now purchase it at their local convenience store, improving accessibility and convenience for travelers. This approach is particularly helpful when unexpectedly needing to prepare for overseas travel.
In a pilot program conducted by GS25 in June across three Incheon Airport stores, sales during the late-night/early morning hours (10 PM to 6 AM) accounted for the highest percentage at 38.1%. GS25 analyzed that the product was particularly popular among 'night owl' travelers who were caught unprepared or faced urgent departures.
To celebrate the launch of the new 'Easy SIM for Overseas Travel,' GS25 is hosting an SNS review event until August 31st. Participants who share their travel experiences on their personal SNS channels, including the designated hashtags, will be entered into a raffle to win prizes such as △an Instax Mini (1 winner) △a 50,000 won VIPS gift card (2 winners).
The 'Easy SIM for Overseas Travel' product is slated for wider rollout across all stores nationwide in August. GS25 aims to solidify its position as a leader in convenience store communication services by launching an 'e-SIM' service through Woori Dongne GS in the latter half of this year.
